Nantucket Greenhouse from Sturdi Built

Comparing Sturdi Built's Redwood Framing to Steel and Aluminum Framed Greenhouses

When comparing a Sturdi-Built greenhouse with a greenhouse framed with Aluminum or Steel the biggest difference is not simply the model name, roofline or list of accessories. It is the framing material at the heart of the structure.

Sturdi-Built crafts its greenhouses from clear all-heart redwood in Portland, Oregon. Some Aluminum greenhouse builders are based in Canada and many in China. Metal framed greenhouses can offers custom options and engineer structures for demanding climates. However, a redwood greenhouse and a metal greenhouse create very different experiences in your garden—and potentially different growing environments.

Framing Makes a Difference

Aluminum and steel are strong, durable and well suited to structural framing, but it is also highly conductive. This means heat moves through the metal much more readily than through wood. Redwood acts as a natural thermal barrier, slowing heat transfer through the greenhouse frame.

That distinction matters during cold nights. Every framing member that connects the warm interior with the cold outdoors can become a path for heat loss. A redwood frame reduces that frame-related thermal bridging compared with an aluminum frame.

This does not mean that framing alone determines the heating bill. Greenhouse size, glazing, air leakage, outdoor temperature, wind, foundation and desired indoor temperature all play major roles. But when two greenhouses have comparable size, glazing and sealing, redwood provides a thermally friendlier frame. An aluminum greenhouse requires more energy investment to offset the additional loss through its framing.

Earth First Choice

Framing begins long before a greenhouse reaches your garden. Redwood is a renewable forest resource when it is grown and harvested under responsible forest management. While the trees grow, redwood forests take up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, release oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife. California’s Forest Practice Rules require harvested timberland to meet reforestation standards, allowing new trees to grow from seed or redwood sprouts as well as from planting. In many harvest plans, the rules call for five planted trees per harvested tree.

Aluminum begins with bauxite ore. Major bauxite producing countries include Guinea, Australia, China, Brazil and India. Bauxite is commonly strip mined (or surface mined): vegetation and topsoil are removed to reach the bauxite ore. Without careful planning and restoration, that disturbance can destroy habitat, expose soil to erosion and affect nearby water resources and habitat. Mining practices and restoration results vary.

The mined Bauxite is refined into alumina, then smelted into aluminum which uses substantial electricity. The source of that electricity matters to the metal’s climate footprint. Recycled aluminum uses less energy than alumina.

It’s unknown if every aluminum greenhouse frame came directly from newly mined bauxite.  Customers who want to compare environmental impacts should ask each manufacturer about material sourcing and recycled content.

For Sturdi-Built, clear all-heart redwood brings the character of a living forest to a long-lasting greenhouse. Choosing wood also means asking where it was grown, how the forest was managed and how long the finished greenhouse will serve.

A Greenhouse You Can Easily Make Your Own

When you want to add a new shelf, hang a basket, or move a plant support, your greenhouse should make it easy to adapt as your garden grows.  Redwood framing makes that easy. Hooks, screws, plant supports, shelves, thermometers and lightweight accessories can be attached to the wood framing in any convenient location using appropriate wood fasteners.

Aluminum and steel framing typically relies on specific bolts, clips, channels, brackets or other manufacturer-approved fasteners. Those systems can work very well, but gardeners need to use hardware designed for the frame and avoid drilling or fastening in ways that might affect drainage, glazing or structural performance.  If that business closes, customers with metal famed greenhouses will more than likely loose a source of compatible hardware.  This may be exaggerated when the greenhouse is produced outside of the USA, such as China.

For the gardener who likes to rearrange hanging baskets, add a trellis or create a new place to hang a gardening tool, Sturdi-Built’s wood framing offers complete flexibility.

Tempered Glass or Polycarbonate Glazing

Sturdi-Built's standard roof glazing is tempered glass. It offers exceptional clarity, abundant natural light and the traditional appearance many homeowners want in a garden greenhouse. Sturdi-Built also offers 6mm twin-wall polycarbonate for customers who prefer its lighter weight, impact resistance and insulating air space.

The practical question is not simply “glass or polycarbonate?” It is what comes standard in the greenhouse being quoted, what is an upgrade and which material best serves the customer's priorities:

  • Tempered glass provides a clear view, high light transmission and a timeless conservatory appearance.
  • Multiwall polycarbonate provides greater impact resistance and improved insulating performance, but the view through it is diffused rather than clear.
  • Insulated glass can substantially improve thermal performance, but it adds cost and weight.

When comparing proposals, ask both manufacturers to specify the glazing on the roof, sidewalls and end walls—not merely the word “glass” or “polycarbonate.”

Garden Architecture or a Metal Structure

A greenhouse occupies a prominent place in the landscape. It should be evaluated not only as growing equipment, but also as something the homeowner will see from the house and enjoy for decades.

Sturdi-Built's clear all-heart redwood, traditional rooflines and handcrafted details give it the warmth of garden architecture. The natural wood frame works particularly well with Craftsman homes, historic properties, woodland gardens and landscapes where the greenhouse is intended to be a focal point. Redwood can be left to weather naturally or finished to complement the home and garden.

Metal Greenhouse Builders produces a refined aluminum greenhouse with multiple frame colors, roof slopes and custom configurations. Its appearance is clean or industrial, depending on the model and finish. For homeowners who prefer minimal maintenance and the crisp lines of metal, that can be an advantage.

Beauty is personal. The central question is whether you want the warmth and character of handcrafted redwood or the streamlined appearance of an aluminum structure.

Where its Made

Sturdi-Built greenhouses are handcrafted in Portland, Oregon, and marketed as made in the USA. For an American customer, that supports domestic manufacturing and provides direct access to the team designing and building the greenhouse.

Greenhouse builders from Canada and China ships throughout North America. American buyers should ask for a complete delivered proposal and confirm the current treatment of freight, brokerage, currency conversion and any applicable duties or tariffs. These costs and rules can change, so they should be verified when the order is placed.

Customization and Severe Weather Engineering

Most greenhouse manufacturers offer more than lightweight, one-size-fits-all kits. Some promotes heavy aluminum profiles, custom designs and engineered wind- and snow-load upgrades. Sturdi-Built offers structural Weather Kits that strengthen its redwood greenhouses for demanding snow and wind conditions without turning the growing area into a forest of interior supports.

Sturdi-Built offers professional engineers to provide site-specific engineering calculations when required for a building permit. Permit requirements vary, so customers should confirm the design loads and documentation required by their local building department before ordering.

When comparing quotes for a challenging climate, insist on the same site criteria: ground snow load, roof snow load, wind speed and exposure, greenhouse dimensions, glazing and foundation connection. A general statement that a greenhouse is “strong” is not a substitute for a design matched to the property.

Long Term Ownership

Maintenance is another meaningful difference. An aluminum or steel frame does not require a wood finish. Redwood is naturally durable, but an owner may choose to apply and periodically maintain a penetrating finish to preserve its original color. In return, wood is easy to repair, refinish and personalize with ordinary tools.

Buying American

Choosing a Sturdi-Built greenhouse supports American manufacturing. We build our greenhouses in Portland, Oregon, and source approximately 95% of our parts in the United States, supporting the craftspeople who make them and the American businesses that supply us.  Some greenhouse companies are headquartered in Canada. With U.S.–Canada trade rules changing, buyers should compare complete delivered prices and ask whether any import duties apply to the specific greenhouse they are considering. For customers who want to invest in American craftsmanship, Sturdi-Built offers a clear choice.

Which Greenhouse Is Right for You?

A metal greenhouse may be a strong fit for someone who wants an aluminum greenhouse, prefers a low-maintenance metal finish, values its lifetime warranty or wants to select from an extensive range of glass and polycarbonate systems.

Sturdi-Built is the compelling choice for someone who wants:

  • The warmth and beauty of clear all-heart redwood
  • A frame that is naturally less conductive than aluminum
  • The freedom to attach hooks, supports and accessories in convenient locations
  • A clear tempered-glass roof as the standard presentation
  • A handcrafted structure that complements the home and landscape
  • A greenhouse made by a U.S. manufacturer
  • Custom design and weather-strengthening options backed by people who know the product

The best greenhouse is not merely the one that encloses plants. It is the one that fits the way you garden, performs in your climate and looks as though it belongs in your backyard.

For homeowners who want their greenhouse to feel like lasting garden architecture—not simply equipment—Sturdi-Built's handcrafted redwood construction makes a meaningful difference.
